|Battle of Nashville Monument Groundbreaking Ceremonies
On a brisk and wintry December 13, 1997, the Tennessee Historical Commission hosted a public ground-breaking ceremony at the new site before a crowd of 150 dedicated supporters. The event was officiated by Tennessee Historical Commission Chairman, Ward DeWitt (at lectern). Wes Shofner, President of the Battle of Nashville Preservation Society, then delivered comments to address "Why Should We Remember?"
At the ceremony's conclusion, and despite the chilly weather, the crowd remained to explore the new site and to study an easel display of the concept plan for an interpretive park surrounding the monument. The plan was prepared by Hawkins Partners, the project's chief contractor and a leading Nashville landscape architecture firm.
